Through a commercialised hollywood image handed down by the constant stream of mass media an idea has been planted in us. The idea of what the ideal body is. This has resulted in the pursuit of the ideal form through obsession with beauty and self image. The gym has played a key role in this process and has therefor become a place of narcissism and sexuality.
The gym has moved away from what it once stood for which was health and well-being; instead what goes on in gyms now can be damaging both physically and mentally.
This project seeks to both question and critique the gym typology whilst at the same time commenting on the current state of consumerist society. The project will look at issues surrounding: self image, beauty, perfection, sexuality, masculinity/femininity and exhibitionism.
